Angel: The Perfume That Invented Dessert

SCENT OF THE DAY

Angel: The Perfume That Invented Dessert

Every caramel-vanilla bestseller on the shelf owes rent to one bottle. In 1992, designer Thierry Mugler asked perfumers Olivier Cresp and Yves de Chiris for something that recalled the funfairs of his childhood: candied apples, cotton candy, sugar in the air. They gave him Angel, a perfume with almost no flowers, a shocking dose of patchouli and a sweetness the industry had never dared to bottle. Critics and historians credit it with creating a whole fragrance family: the gourmand.

Every caramel-vanilla bestseller on the shelf owes rent to one bottle.

It was polarizing then and it's legendary now. It was inducted into the FiFi Awards Hall of Fame in 2007, and it still comes in that unmistakable blue star.

The notes

  • Top: Calabrian bergamot, red fruits
  • Heart: praline, caramel, cotton candy
  • Base: patchouli, vanilla

When to wear it

Wear it in fall and winter, on nights out and to anything with a dress code and a dance floor. Mugler itself says one spray is all you need. Believe them.

Khamrah: Dessert, Served After Midnight

SCENT OF THE DAY

Khamrah: Dessert, Served After Midnight

Some fragrances whisper. Khamrah pours you a drink. When Lattafa launched it in 2022, the Dubai-based house gave it a name that evokes wine in Arabic and a bottle cut like a crystal decanter. Then it went viral, and it hasn't come down since.

Some fragrances whisper. Khamrah pours you a drink.

The opening is warm spice: cinnamon and nutmeg, brightened with a squeeze of bergamot. Then comes the reason people stop you in elevators: a heart of sticky dates and praline, laced with tuberose. It dries down to vanilla, tonka, benzoin, myrrh and smooth woods, cozy enough to wrap yourself in and rich enough to turn heads.

The notes

  • Top: cinnamon, nutmeg, bergamot
  • Heart: dates, praline, tuberose
  • Base: vanilla, tonka bean, benzoin, myrrh, amberwood, Akigalawood

When to wear it

Wear it on cold nights, holiday parties and slow dinners that turn into late ones. It's unisex, so share it or don't. It's potent: two sprays on the chest under a sweater is the move. In August heat, let it rest.

Aventus: The Emperor’s New Cologne

Creed Aventus perfume bottle

SCENT OF THE DAY

Aventus: The Emperor's New Cologne

In 2010, Creed released a men's fragrance inspired, the house said, by Napoleon Bonaparte: a man of war, power and, apparently, excellent taste in fruit. Its creator, Erwin Creed, told the trade press that the blackcurrant nodded to Corsica, the emperor's birthplace. Pineapple, his supposed favorite dessert, became the star. The emperor conquered Europe. Aventus conquered every cologne thread on the internet.

It smells like money that doesn't need to say so.

The magic is the contrast. Juicy pineapple, bergamot and apple up top; a smoky streak of birch and patchouli in the heart; oakmoss, ambergris and vanilla holding it all together. It smells like money that doesn't need to say so.

The notes

  • Top: pineapple, bergamot, blackcurrant, apple
  • Heart: birch, rose, jasmine, patchouli
  • Base: oakmoss, ambergris, vanilla, musk

When to wear it

Wear it any time you plan to be remembered: the boardroom, a rooftop dinner, the wedding where your ex is a guest. It works year-round, and it's at its best in spring and on warm evenings. Two sprays will do it. Conquerors don't overdo it.
